There are many ways to experience Estes Park, one of which is with the several outdoor adventures available to visitors. From hiking and biking to bouldering and rock climbing, there are plenty of ways to get your heart pounding while experiencing the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. One of the more unique activities in town is the Estes Park Via Ferrata. Read further to see if this is the right adventure for you!
But first…what is a Via Ferrata?
Italian for “iron path,” Via Ferrata is a protected climbing route that is used in the Alps and other parts of the world. Built with a steel cable rail fixed to a rock face, the prepared route makes mountain climbing accessible and safe for everyone. Thus, no previous rock-climbing experience is necessary.
The route
The Estes Park Via Ferrata reaches roughly 600 vertical feet and includes a short traverse. Adventures are secured to the designated pathway of anchored steel cables and ascend using the rock features, placed ladders, and steel steps. While the challenge of accomplishing such a feat is the attraction, it is also a great way to take in the beautiful scenery of Rocky Mountain National Park and the surrounding Estes Park valley.
Your guides
Your guides are experienced climbers with the Kent Mountain Adventure Center. The Estes Park Via Ferrata is not open to the public, so a KMAC guide must accompany you. They accept groups, couples, families, and individual registrations.
What to wear
Be sure to wear loose-fitting clothes so you can easily move around. Bring layers so you can add on clothes or remove clothes depending on how hot or cold you might get. Remember, you will be face to face with a slab of rock, so wear clothes you feel protected in, like pants instead of shorts.
What to bring
While your guide will have most of the climbing equipment you need, it is suggested to bring your own day pack with water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, rain jacket, and your camera or GoPro.
