When visiting Estes Park, a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park is a must. But before you head out for a day in the park, read our checklist for Rocky Mountain National Park and a few of our must-sees to help you get started!

Good hiking boots

The reason why the mountains in Colorado are called the “Rocky Mountains,” is due to their rocky terrain. You will often encounter, especially while hiking, large boulders, rock formations, and pebbled paths. But all that is manageable with a good pair of sturdy hiking boots. The key here is finding something that is waterproof, provides ankle support, and of course, fits you well.

Bring layers

Due to the varied elevation, you will encounter, temperatures can change drastically. You might start off warm but as you climb in elevation, temperatures will become cooler, so bringing clothing layers is advisable. Especially if you are heading to the high country, it is always suggested to bring layers to prepare for any kind of temperature, even in summer.

Rain jacket

Almost a guarantee, visitors can expect summer afternoon rainstorms to roll in over the mountain tops. While they typically don’t last long, weather can change dramatically with cooler temps and of course rain. So, it is always advisable to carry a rain jacket to keep yourself dry.

Although you can’t always predict the weather, a good rule of thumb is to not be above the treeline anytime afternoon. Afternoon storms often bring lighting and not even the best rain jacket can protect you from a lightning strike.

Day pack with hydration and food

Invest in a comfortable day pack to carry all of what you need during your hike, such as food, clothing, a camera, and of course water! One key component to your day pack is having a hydration system inside. Water is the most important thing to pack when spending time in Rocky Mountain National Park. And it is always advisable to bring more than you think you will need. Depending on how long you plan to be out or the trails you plan to explore, some even bring a first-aid kit as an extra precaution.

Hat and sunscreen

The Colorado sun can be your best friend but can also be your worst enemy if you are not properly protected. Be sure to bring a good hat that covers your face and sunscreen. Some hikes are shaded but some are well-exposed making it possible to get burned if you’re not prepared.

Binoculars or camera

There is plenty to see in Rocky Mountain National Park and you don’t want to miss any of it!

So, grab a pair of trusty binoculars or your camera and throw them in your pack to catch a glimpse of a far-off mountain peak, local wildlife, and distant wildflowers.

A good attitude

Complete your checklist for Rocky Mountain National Park with a good attitude. While the park is known for its unparalleled beauty, it is also known for its crowded roads and trails. In addition to the crowds, the weather is also unpredictable so you will have to adjust to infrequent weather patterns that might change your plans for the day. So, remember to be flexible and to keep a positive attitude!
