How to Have Outdoor Fun at Hermit Park Open Space

Hiking boot. Legs on mountain trail during trekking in forest. Leather ankle shoes

Bike riding, hiking, horseback riding, and camping are some of the adventures at the Hermit Park Open Space in Larimer County.  Hermit Park Open Space encompasses 1,362 acres of preserved land near Estes Park. The preserve is nestled in the hills at elevations of 7,880-8964 feet. This property conserves one of the largest wetland areas in Larimer County. Visitors will find a Ponderosa pine forest, wetland meadows, and hiking and equestrian trails leading through the park.

Hikers can follow the Homestead Meadows Trail, which leads to the adjacent U.S. Forest Service land and the Kruger Rock Trail. Hikers can also enjoy the shorter Cabin Loop Trail from the preserved Hermit’s Log Cabin. The accessible sections of the Cabin Loop Trail include the Bluebird and Big Gulch areas. Other parts of the trail cover aspen groves, Rock Cliff, Spring Valley, and Big Springs. Equestrians can explore the winding Limber Pine Trail.

Wildlife is everywhere in this preserved open space. This is home to moose, bears, deer, and elk. You will also see birds and ground animals, including squirrels and chipmunks. Respect their space. Stay on the marked trails. Never feed wild animals, and keep your dogs on a leash. Hikers must pack out all trash and pet waste.

Facilities

A Group Pavilion that can accommodate up to 150 guests is available with a reservation. The pavilion has stone-wrapped columns, a gas fire pit, and picnic benches. Keep all uneaten food covered. Camping is available with a permit.

Hermit Park Open Space is located two miles southeast of Estes Park. It is open from March to mid-December, based on weather conditions. The park is a preserved area created by the Larimer County Department of Natural Resources, Colorado Outdoors, and various local communities.
