Snowshoeing in Estes Park is one of the most popular winter activities visitors can enjoy. Easy to pick up, snowshoeing is accessible to all skill levels and is a great way to get outside and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery, even with snow on the ground. If you are heading out for the first time, here are a few beginner tips for your snowshoeing adventures in Estes Park.
Why go snowshoeing
Snowshoeing is winter’s version of hiking. Strap on a pair of snowshoes, and you can explore almost anywhere you want to go! At higher elevations where the snow sticks around, the trails are layered with powder, making ideal conditions for snowshoeing. Trek off the usual trail, and cross lakes, ponds, streams when snowshoeing, and discover new landscapes with stunning views around you!
Gear you will need
The best part about snowshoeing is that there isn’t a lot of gear required. Really all you need is a good pair of winter books, snowshoes, and poles. Bring a small backpack if you plan to be out for a while so you can bring snacks, a camera, an extra layer of clothing, etc. And remember to always bring water!
What to wear
As always, it is suggested to dress in layers. Colorado weather can change rapidly, and you don’t want to be stuck out on the trail without the proper clothing. Dress warm but be able to de-layer as you will most likely work up a sweat hiking through the snow. Another point to keep in mind is making sure your clothes are waterproof or are wicking material to keep the moisture away from your skin. Also, be sure to wear sunscreen, it’s easy to get sunburned in the winter from the snow’s reflection!
