Just because the sun goes down, that doesn’t mean there isn’t much to see in Rocky Mountain National Park. Some might say it’s when the real show begins with a tranquil sky packed full of bright twinkling stars that aren’t often seen within the city limits. But at a higher elevation and with the somewhat remote landscape of the park, stargazing in Rocky Mountain National Park has increasingly become one of the more popular activities in the park.
When to go stargazing
For optimal stargazing, plan for a visit during the new moon. To ensure you see as many stars as possible, it’s best to have as little light as possible to make sure every star pops. Another key factor in seeing the best night sky is the weather. While it’s hard to predict the weather, especially in Colorado, going out on a clear night is ideal.
Where to stargaze in Rocky Mountain National Park
While stargazing in Rocky Mountain National Park is available pretty much anywhere in the park, there are a few spots that are our favorite:
- Trail Ridge Road – reaching above treeline, Trail Ridge Road affords stargazers unobstructed and expansive views of the night’s sky. From almost any vantage point along this popular road, stars, planets, and the milky way are visible and seem to extend into infinity.
- Bear Lake – while any lake will do for stargazing, we suggest starting with Bear Lake. With its easy access and beautiful surroundings, it’s an optimal choice. The lake adds an extra element and creates a perfect pallet for a brilliant reflection of stars. It is truly one of the more unique ways to stargaze in the park.
Park programs
Rocky Mountain National Park offers a wide variety of programs to help learn and better observe the night’s sky. The below programs are available through the park’s website:
- Astronomy in the Park – observe the night sky with the guidance of a ranger and expert volunteer astronomers. The program itself is 30 minutes which is usually then followed by an extended viewing period.
- Stars and meteors – with the aid of a telescope, explore the astronomy of the Rocky Mountain’s night sky. The entire program lasts an hour to an hour and a half.
- Stories behind the moon and stars – explore the night’s sky storytelling and fun activities. This program is great for the kids and runs about an hour to an hour and a half.
What to bring for stargazing
Not in your typical element it is essential to bring the right gear to ensure an exceptional experience.
- Warm clothes – temperatures at higher elevation are generally 10 to 20 degrees cooler than they are at a lower elevation, and of course, at night temperatures cool down. So, stargazing in Rocky Mountain National Park, even in the summer, can be a bit cold. Be sure to bring warm clothes and lots of layers.
- Water and snacks – it’s always advisable when you head out into the high country no matter if it’s during the day or at night, to bring plenty of water and snacks. It’s better to be over-prepared and under-prepared.
- Headlamp or flashlight – additional lighting is helpful in scoping out your surroundings and acts as a helpful aid if photographing the night sky.
- Camera and tripod – if you plan to photograph the stars a decent DSL with a wide aperture and tripod are two essential pieces of equipment.
Rocky Mountain National Park Night Sky Festival
Every summer the park hosts the Rocky Mountain National Park Night Sky Festival to celebrate and highlight the sparkled sky that greets the park every night. The festival runs for three days and offers plenty of activities throughout the weekend, educational speakers, special programs, and of course night sky viewing.
