Planning a vacation to Estes Park? Then a visit to Rocky Mountain National Park is a must. One of the best ways to see the park is hiking through its 300 miles of trails. But before you head out, be sure you know what to pack when hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park with the help of our list below:

Sturdy pair of hiking boots

There is a reason why the mountains in Colorado are called the “Rocky Mountains,” it’s because of their rocky terrain. Large boulders, rock formations, and pebbled paths can sometimes make for more difficult terrain. But nothing that can’t be managed with a good sturdy pair of hiking boots. The key here is finding something that is waterproof, provides ankle support, and of course, fits you well.

Rain jacket

Almost as a guarantee, expect afternoon rainstorms to roll in atop the mountains. While they typically don’t last long, weather can change dramatically with cooler temps and of course rain. So, it is always advisable to carry a rain jacket to keep yourself dry.

Although you can’t always predict the weather, a good rule of thumb is to not be above treeline in the afternoon. Afternoon storms often bring lighting and not even the best rain jacket can protect you from a bolt of lightning.

Clothing layers

In addition to a rain jacket, think of bringing several layers of clothing. Weather can vary greatly in the mountains, and you could find yourself hot, cool, then cold all in one day. Especially if you are heading to the high country, it is always suggested to bring layers to prepare any kind of temperature, even in summer.

Day pack with hydration

Invest in a comfortable day pack to carry all of what you need during your hike, such as food, clothing, camera, and of course water! One key component to your day pack is having a hydration system inside. Water is the most important thing to pack when hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park. And is always advisable to bring more than you think you will need.

Food to refuel

You will most certainly work up an appetite when hiking through Rocky Mountain National Park, so it is always a good idea to bring some snacks along to refuel your body. You can stock up at one of the several grocery stores in Estes Park with granola, energy bars, fruit, sandwiches and more.

Hat and sunscreen

The Colorado sun can be your best friend but can also be your worst enemy, if you are not properly protected. Be sure to bring a good hat that covers your face and a good sunscreen. Some hikes are shaded but some are well-exposed making it possible to get burned if you’re not wearing sunscreen or a hat.

Binoculars

There is plenty to see in Rocky Mountain National Park and you don’t want to miss any of it!

So, grab a pair of trusty binoculars and throw them in your pack to catch a glimpse of a far-off mountain peak, local wildlife, and distant wildflowers.

Plastic bag

Often you will see signs at trailheads stating, “leave no trace.” Don’t leave anything behind on the trail indicating you were there like a piece of trash or toilet paper when nature calls. Everything must be packed out, so bringing a plastic bag is helpful in collecting items not to be left behind.
