How to Enjoy the Summer in Estes Park

Summer in Estes Park is one of the best times to visit. With warmer temperatures, cleared trails, and longer days there is so much to explore on and off the mountain. Discover how you can enjoy summer in Estes Park with these activities.

Take a hike

One of the best ways to enjoy summer in Estes Park is with a hike or a leisurely walk. Luckily, nearby Rocky Mountain National Park offers plenty of day hiking options. Rocky Mountain National Park is home to over 300 miles of hiking trails, making it one of the best places for exploring Colorado’s beauty. Some of the hikes can be done in one day and don’t require an overnight stay in the park.

If it is your first time hiking, check out easier trails such as Lily Lake Loop and Bear Lake. Or if you are up for something a bit longer tackle Fern Falls or Cub Lake. Read here for our full list of favorite day hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park.

Or if you are looking for some easy paths around town for a nice afternoon walk, check out these Estes Park walking trails. One of our favorites is the loop around Lake Estes. At 3.73 miles, the relatively flat loop follows the perimeter of the lake for beautiful views and a chance to see wildlife.

Estes Park Via Ferrata

There are many ways to experience summer in Estes Park, one of which is with the Via Ferrata. Italian for “iron path,” Via Ferrata is a protected climbing route that is used in the Alps and other parts of the world. Built with a steel cable rail fixed to a rock face, the prepared route makes mountain climbing accessible and safe for everyone.

The Estes Park Via Ferrata reaches roughly 600 vertical feet and includes a short traverse. While the challenge of accomplishing such a climb is the attraction, it is also a great way to take in the beautiful scenery around you.

See the wildflowers

Summer in Rocky Mountain National Park is picturesque, with colorful blooms and rugged mountain peaks. Typically, around later spring, early summer Mother Nature shows her colors with an abundance of blooming wildflowers throughout the park.

Enjoy Estes Park downtown

Take a summer stroll through town along the Riverwalk Downtown Estes Park. Follow the paved path alongside The Big Thompson River and enjoy scenes of nature with shops and restaurants to stop at along the way.

While you can enjoy Estes Park’s local art galleries any time of the year, summer is the best time as galleries stay open later and gallery doors are left open, creating an inviting and inclusive shopping experience. Plus, visitors will enjoy the First Friday Art Groove where they can meet the artist and enjoy food and drinks at participating galleries.

Dine al fresco

It’s summer and who doesn’t love an evening of dining under the stars or a mid-afternoon picnic lunch? While taking a stroll through downtown and the Riverwalk, be sure to stop in at one of the many restaurants with outdoor seating. Often with scenic views and always pleasant mountain air, dining outside in Estes Park is a favorite summertime activity.
